By common critical consent, this is one of the late Woody Shaw's best albums, featuring a minor masterpiece of trumpet improvisation on "Sippin' At Bells". This recording, made in 1987, was the first to be released by IN + OUT Records. Unhappily it proved to be Woody Shaw's last recording under his own name. He died following a tragic accident in New York on March 10th, 1989. Miles Davis described Shaw as a great player with his own original ideas. Woody once said, "100% of me goes into being a creative musician, because I want to contribute to this beautiful art form called jazz." With "In My Own Sweet Way", Woody Shaw has made a most memorable contribution to the art of jazz.
